Today was my first experience of Glass Alley, and I was certainly not disappointed. I had an excellent Colombian geisha; it combined a bright acidity (akin to a Kenyan/Rwandan coffee in many ways) with a subtle, tea-like body. It had really nice notes of grape, raisin, subtle milk chocolate, bergamot and this sort of indescribable 'biscuity' note to it. More impressive than the coffee was the owner Nathan, who is obviously passionate and deeply knowledgeable about coffee. I talked with him after about the parameters of his pour-over, and it was clear that his depth of knowledge is such that he can modulate his techniques to bring out the best in each individual coffee. It was a real pleasure talking coffee with him and experiencing the general lift in the coffee IQ of Wollongong. The laneway and associated mural gives Glass Alley quite the Melbourne flavour. I will definitely be back.
Excellent little cafe in a prime location in Wollongong Central, the fit out and seating is funky - the alley outside is very cool. More importantly every coffee I have had has been spot on, the owner's obvious enthusiasm for coffee is matched by his knowledge and ability. Great to chat with someone who suggests something I would NEVER do - milk in an Ethiopian SO?! Are you MAD!? - but the result was stunning. Great cold drip as well.
