Hmmmm...wanted to like this place but I think I wrecked a potential interaction with the staff when I requested a CAPPUCINO. The look of displeasure wasn't hidden by the staff member. I'm sorry, I should have realised to not have a milk-based drink...but I just didn't think about the forthcoming surliness that I would be on the receiving end of. Anyway coffee was fine. Great interior (apart from the mini 1970s primary school chairs that you have to sit in), but very quiet for a Friday at 11am. I can sort of understand why, as it's in a location that you can only bump into by accident. I really liked the use of the location, which I'd only ever previously considered as a skanky exit to a car park building. Great range of siphon devices, but my interest in them was brushed off by the staff member, who obviously wasn't going to explain them to me, after I'd ordered the CAPPUCCINO. Oh well, plenty of other choices around town.
Lamason coffee bar is the culmination of Dave Lamason's career in hospitality, coffee, and espresso technology; the design of Dan Eaves of Designgroup Stapleton Elliot; and the result is first class. Lamason is New Zealand's first dedicated Siphon Coffee bar. Dave runs 4 Hario Syphon units on a custom 4-burner natural gas rack in the style of a Tokyo siphon bar, and offers a single origin of the week through the siphons, and hario dripper rack. Dave first gained his reputation as an exceptional barista through working in various bustling espresso bars and cafes, and this history is not neglected at Lamason — a beautiful chrome San Marco espresso machine sits to the right side of the cafe, and you can expect some of the best espresso-based bevvies NZ has to offer here. Located at 28 Bond Street under the Lombard Car Park, just off Manners Mall in the Wellington CBD, it's a spacious cafe with indoor and (covered) outdoor seating. First and foremost this is a coffee bar, though fresh sammies, croissants, pies and sweets are available for the non-coffee-exclusive customer (i.e. hungry person). An awesome cafe from a truly passionate coffee and hospitality pro.
Dave loves siphon. So he's started Wellington's first Siphon Bar (though of course you can get any kind of espresso drink as well). It's not long opened at the time of writing: food choices are limited but sufficient - just some blokey pies and sandwiches with a few sweets to have with the coffee. Beautifully designed space; very friendly service... and the best siphon-brewed coffee in Wellington.
