What an amazing fall from grace - this placed used to be consistently great - coffee and service, I would happy pay $8 for my coffee. I was almost a daily visitor a few years back... Interestingly I noticed the service slip before the coffee, but the coffee soon followed! I pop by every now and then to remember how great it was, but the coffee always disappoints and the staff, verging on rude on some days, and on other days they are nice, but it feels forced. I hope for the current owners' sake that they can turn it around and maybe one day I will go back and be impressed.
Coming back after a year away from Epic I was reminded of all the good and bad parts here. First the bad. It is expensive - even for Perth, known for expensive coffee. The staff, while perfectly civil, don't make you feel like the most important person in the room. The atmosphere is one of serious people meeting other serious people and having serious discussions. Why do I go back? Simple - the coffee. The baristas here are the best in Perth and they serve pretty much the best coffee. The are also one of the few that serve a really good mocha - not using the squeezy bottle of chocolate sludge, but proper powdered Belgian chocolate. Just get it takeaway, and be prepared for a bit of sticker shock.
synesso machines and well presented coffee, however very average in taste. I was a bit disapointed given the hype around West Perth of this place. The service was very good even though it flet like a production line but that would have been due to the frequency of custom, atmosphere also lets the place down a bit.
