On the recommendation of friends, I went to Yellow Bird for the first time last night with 6 people. Three of us had the bean and coriander quesadilla and we were all violently ill with food poisoning. Tonight, I called Yellow Bird to notify them of this - in the hope that no one else becomes sick like we were. The Manager, Daniel, was short, blunt, disinterested and made it abundantly clear that he did not care through his disengaged tone and dismissive language. It was Daniels opportunity to turn a pretty appalling situation around - that's what good customer service is. But clearly, Yellow Bird Cafe don't care about food safety and hygiene, or their reputation. Terrible Management. Food that will make you sick.
It was the loud, raucous music that first attracted me to Yellow Bird to satisfy a much-needed coffee hit. My strong soy latte was great, it was strong without the bitterness or the 'curdling' effect of more acidic beans. I stayed for a big scrambled egg feast, washed down with a long black that was also thankfully not bitter and quite strong. Love the atmosphere here, although it's perhaps not the best for a quiet, introspective chat!
A classic venue for hangovers, their egg meals are big and the coffees satisfying. I've had maybe one or two so-so coffees (out of many), but if you get the bald guy with the beard you'll be sure to get a great coffee. Nice latte art and strong coffee. The atmosphere is nice - kinda one of those op-shop couch feels, without being cliche. They also have a large outdoor seating area (great for summer), and it's always busy. They like their music too, the cafe is owned by Something For Kate drummer Clint Hyndman so expect some good rock music. Just don't ask them to turn it down :p They serve alcohol (try the Bloody Mary) and great food. The breakfast menu is great (go Death Benedict), so is the risotto. Steer clear of the burger, sausage and soup stuff tho...
