What a weird little place. I remember this being one of Melbourne’s first Specialty coffee shops, possibly even being the place that set the rubric for the hole-in-the-wall cafe. Over the past ten years, Melbourne’s coffee scene had definitely caught up, and to be honest, I kinda forgot this place existed. A friend told me that Switchboard was under new management, and that she had a really solid coffee here, so I figured I would pop by when I was in the city next. I wasn’t disappointed. Coffee is by Coffee Supreme - their house blend is a blend of two South American beans (hence South Blend). There isn’t any single origin or filter. Had a short black and a flat white - Coffee was perfectly extracted; the beans were a little boring black, but cut through milk really well. Plenty of food options available. Kinda funny watching the barista (who seemed more than a little too big for this space) try and wash dishes in the corner. The staff seemed to know everyone in the lane way well, lots of banter and jokes, which I guess is what keeps people coming back to small places like this. Good to see a Melbourne institution still has the goods!
Always love this tiny café, as I visited 2 years ago. Never forgotten. Snuggled in with the papers, high performing wifi and yes the best coffee dare I say better than Di Bella and Merlo. Similar body and smooth. I could have had another immediately which is the true test for me. Surrounded by Art Deco tiles and pleasing architecture from a gentler age, and Vintage Chinese Posters. Delightful pastry. Coffee experience divine. I will always come straight to this café when in Swanston Street vicinity.
These guys use a “coffee supreme south roast” beans which I’ve never heard of before. They kind of taste like Di Bella beans to be honest, but despite this fact, the coffee was pretty good. The staff were friendly and the seating is pleasant enough on these warm summer days (could be a bit chilly during the winter). On the plus my soy coffee only cost me $3.50 at lunchtime which I thought was fantastic value! (Not sure if this was a pricing mistake or not).
