This used to be an excellent cafe when it opened 5 years ago. There would be queues out the door for a table and it would be packed from early morning through to late afternoon on weekends. It is now a pale version of its former self - the patrons are thin on the ground and the long blacks are watery and poorly extracted. I won’t be going back.
'Merchants' continues its one way journey to mediocrity and beyond! Coffee by Toby's Estate was 'average', to be generous. Lamb salad was salty to the point of inedibility (due to the dressing used), so food has gone downhill too. We won't be quick to return!
While the cafe has a great atmosphere and the staff are quite friendly, as other reviewers noted, the coffee seems to have gone downhill. The young lady behind the machine was very keen to serve but knew very little about the beans. I had a flat white on a Guatemalan single origin but the milk was over steamed and obscured the flavour. A bit disappointing. (It also seems that they are getting friends to inflate their score. The past few reviewers all gave perfect 10s and each was a brand new user 3 months ago.)
