Usually good coffee but in recent times standard of coffee has dropped. Their hot chocolate is to die for though. Never disappointed with the pastries. Award-winning pastry chef 4 years in a row. Catered their pastries for a function and everybody was raving about the food.
Most people who have driven to work through Richmond at ridiculous o'clock in the morning can testify to dropping into Chimmy's. It must open crazy early as i know i have met people here for an early heart starter at 6am before. It is the only place open at this hour and can get full of tradies and the like quite quickly at all sorts of hours. I find their coffee not very good. It's always made in a rush and not shown the love needed to make me happy. The last time i was there my latte had burnt milk and was not the most drinkable. I dropped it down the hatch as i needed the caffeine fix and i was out of coin. They have a pretty good selection of food but it's not that great either. It's definitely a cafe that suffers in quality the more busy it gets. Next time im there at 6 am.. i'll know now to stay away from latte's.... to quote the great Ron Burgundy.. "milk was a bad choice"
Chimmys certainly looked OK form the street, the food was fair to good, but it was the coffee that I was really hoping to be impressive, alas it wasn't, short macchiatto was my coffee of choice. Boy, was I disappointed, way too hot and seved almost as a mini latte. Won't be returning!!
Built in 1901 as a Bakery, Chimmy's is now a cafe and French pastry house. Part of the Convent Bakery (with locations at the Abbotsford Convent at High St, Kew) the little bite sized cakes are awfully tempting. From the street, there are cute French style round tables and cane chairs, quite appealing. Inside the cafe, one is met by a stark and modern counter. Into the next room, what appear to be original brick walls are ecclecticly mixed with rustic wooden tables, and brass round tables, somewhat confusingly. My wife and I were unable to relax here, and both found the coffee to be too bitter for our liking. The latte was smooth though, there's a decent menu and great looking cakes. Perhaps don't come here just for a coffee, but perhaps for lunch. And if it's not too cold, sit outside.
