Babka makes great bread and their beef pie and croissants are nicely done. I tried a few of their jams and compared to their European counterparts, I found them lacking in fruit and overly sweet and syrupy - but maybe usual for Aussie jams. As far as their coffee goes, I had a flat white and I haven't been back for another. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything in particular, just milky and warm and vaguely tasting of coffee. Nice if you like a weak milky coffee I guess. I do go back for bread though and we want to go back to try their Russian dishes for lunch. Cute little room as well. Seems very popular.
Babka coffee is some of the worst in melbourne, normally undrinkable. It has been that way for as long as it has been open. I always have peppermint tea when I eat there. The food is great. Service is rubbish, arrogant, rude, and offhand. That has also been consistent for twenty years. The girls, and they are all girls, who work there think they are quite special, but they are as interchangeable as the furniture.
Food is delicious, bread is always good and that's about it. Coffee is lacking in flavour, body and love, staff is pretentious, they get annoyed that your there and that you want to buy something, I have never been anywhere that had such an attitude, lack of atmosphere and with staff that don't know the first thing about customer service. Never again, not worth it.
I was recommended this little bakery cafe. Their baked goods looked excellent. The staff were nice. Atmosphere wasn't much to speak of, pretty normal. My cappuccino - below average. The foam was nice, but the coffee itself was a bit of a fail. Quite weak and really not very tasty. I nearly didn't finish it.
