Disappointing! I had high hopes after doing plenty of research on where to get decent coffee in LA. I got an espresso, flat white and cappuccino and each suffered from the same burnt, dirty and metallic taste I did not expect to find here. The cafe itself also seemed to lack soul. The ambience was a bit forced. Intelligentsia seemed more interested in being a cool place to be seen than in delivering excellent coffee. For the cyclists, think Rapha clad, out of shape mamils.
Have been twice on my way through from NorCal. The first time I had a pour over. It was really good, I'd give it an 8.5. Second visit I was saddened by my pour over. It was pourly brewed, a tad bitter, and I wasn't able to distinguish any notes of flavour. The grind was to fine. A part from this, I love the place.
excellent coffee in a bustling hip environment. staff know their stuff and happily made flat whites even though they weren't on the menu. I had several short blacks over my week long stay in LA and all were delicious! took a bag of yergacheffe for the travels. Highly recommended by an Australian Batista!
Fantastic coffee, interesting crowd, cool suburb. Along with Handsome Coffee Roasters, Intelligentsia is the premium artisanal coffee provider in Los Angeles (Handsome was actually founded by 3 of the Intelligentsia guys). Their coffee is superb. In terms of location, Silver Lake is the Surry Hills/Williamsburg of LA: dominated by the hipster creative class. As such, it's great for people watching. The dapper/nonchalant staff are very chill and take their craft seriously. But that seriousness takes a bit of time - so don't expect the speediest of turnarounds. You can sit inside around the barista bar or the wall-lined bench. But the outside courtyard area is perfect for fresh air and a street side view.
This is a necessary oasis I hit whenever I'm in town. It used to seem like staff thought they were doing you a massive favour by letting you in the door. Recently though, everyone's been very chill and friendly. The coffee is caramel-buttery smooth and I've yet to have a bad one here. Intelligentsia is one of a small but growing number of cafes worth visiting in LA and it's surprising it's taken so long for the city to attempt to drag itself from the mire of coffee chains. Most recently I ordered a latte which must have been served in the biggest cup they had, which had designs on making it as a soup bowl. And that changed things for me. Like, there's no call for a cup to be that wide is there? Where's the rating on ideal cup width? Seating and the lack thereof can be an issue especially on the days when the line stretches way out the door. But overall the coffee is enjoyable, made by pros and it's an obligatory experience when you're stuck for cafes in LA.
By any other cafe's standard this would be an excellent cup of coffee but compared to their amazing Venice location it was a disappointment. When your brand is number one you have to maintain standards and the cappuccino I ordered here was imperfectly prepared and presented. The shot was over pulled leading to a bitter flavor and the milk was badly textured leading to a flat look and texture. They weren't helped by the fact that they forgot my order. Go to LaMill instead.
