So we all know there is no x in espresso so if you read a review that spells that way, maybe not worth paying attention to. This cafe is actually quite ok. Extraction of double Ristretto was ok. Probably not oily enough though. Art was not incredible but overall one of the better coffees in HK. This cafe although missing vibe, has syphon and standard espresso line up. Roaster on site.
This is right in the heart of Central and is easy to find. A few years ago, their coffee and tastes would have set the bar in Hong Kong. Now that HK has a growing coffee scene, Holly Brown has not kept pace and is no longer at the forefront. Having said this, their coffee is still quite good and far exceeds the chain restaurants. They have gelatos and other HK style desserts to accompany their coffee, and the store is well done and comfortable.
Sadly becoming a chain and going down hill fast. Fast expansion of this cafe into a chain has taken its toll on the roasting, definitely the last time i visit or recommend this cafe. Gelato and fancy ice creams seem to be the core of their business now, can no longer be considered a decent coffee place.
I was very disappointed with the coffee at this cafe. After reading some of the reviews I thought it would at least be okay. However, I found the expresso to one of the worst I have ever tasted. I ordered a double expresso with cream and there was not even enough for a single shot and it was cold. Then it left a very bitter taste in my mouth for hours. Luckily I have found some other places in Hong Kong that are much much better. The ambiance is also dreadful as it was one of the noisiest coffee shops I have been to. This might have been because it was on the weekend and there were many young children eating the ice cream and they were quite noisy and boisterous. The service was friendly and efficient, but I would never go here again.
Its hard to get an early morning coffee in HK as most artisan places open late, but managed to get across to this store around 8am. They roast on site, which is always a good sign, and have reasonable options for a coffee. Had a piccolo and flat white, nothing to rave about, it was an good nonetheless. That said, was grateful to have found them.
Had a quick lunch here today. My espresso was well-made, though I'd concur with one of the earlier reviewers about their roast being too dark. I also have to comment on the size of my espresso. In Italy (and most places I've drunk espresso) it would count as a ristretto. It left me wondering how short their actual ristretto could be. Restrained, yes! Barely there, no!
