Great people. Good coffee. Great food (bagels, cakes, cereal bars). These guys know what they're doing and in a city where there are more and more fancy barista-type cafés these guys not only make coffee to the highest standard but are really nice, chilled out and easy to talk to. They also do decaf for those who need a fix minus the caffeine and loads of great fresh fruit shakes
There has been a surge in the new generation of coffee shops like this opening up in Edinburgh of the last couple of years, and Filament is one which stands out. This is one where the coffee is consistently good - whether you sit in or take away. The roasts they use taste nice and they prepare the coffee well. One of the irritating things in some of the new generation coffee shops is that the baristas can come across with an air of pretentiousness and arrogance. This is not the case at Filament - the staff are always friendly and pleasant. The decor is similar to the current trend in new gen coffee shops - rough around the edges with bare exposed walls and wood with reclaimed furniture and fittings. They pull off the look well here and it works well. The food here is great too - I really liked the lemon polenta cake!
