Was always about the atmosphere at the Front, up until a number of months ago that is, when they finally faced up to the fact their coffee was atrocious and the decision was made to change beans. Great decision as bean, and possibly training, led to excellent coffee. Nevertheless, just when you start to love them they'll produce a coffee to remind you of the old times. With greater consistency I would have given a higher rating. Always enjoy the exhibitions in the small gallery space while waiting for my coffee to be made.
I’ve always been a fan of this quirky space and made a point of dropping in again after hearing they’d switched to beans roasted by Two Before Ten. I was not disappointed. My flat white was a marked improvement on previous offerings, with pleasant notes of dark chocolate throughout. It did have a slightly grainy texture though, which tempered the tasting notes’ claim of a creamy mouthfeel. The Front’s thrift store décor and furniture may not be to everyone’s taste but the alternative vibe, and celebration of live, independent music, are it’s greatest strengths. And let’s not forget the gallery space. I was treated to a ‘good cop, bad cop’ routine behind the counter. Service was a little slow, but the barista was genuinely apologetic and their offsider’s cheekiness made waiting more of a game than a chore.
Warm and welcoming decor and furniture make The Front a nice place to relax and have a quiet conversation. There are often small gigs at this café which add to the already bubbly atmosphere. The coffee, however, is quite sub-par, as it tasted over extracted and therefore burnt, which left a nasty after taste.
The Front is the place to go if you like atmosphere. It wins full points on that count. If you like comfy couches and sitting with people you don't know, this place works. Yet it's still possible to get a quiet place for a quiet chat. RE the coffee, I've never been disappointed, but then, I've never really had high expectations. This time was no different. The coffee was ok. Not excellent, just ok. Super sweet beans. Not hugely strong and the froth wasn't great. Still, a nice enough place to sit with a book or a friend.
