While housesitting in the area recently I wanted a nice cafe with great coffee to visit occasionally to remind me of the Melbourne cafes I have left behind. I have definitely found it at Bruces. It's a roomy and comfortable cafe with a modern urban feel - but at the same time it is looking out over Bass Straight and it's great to sit there with the paper and watch the moods of the sea - even in the dead of winter. There is a very inviting lounging area and young local Mums are encouraged and I noticed a breastfeeding approval sticker by the front door. The decor is funky but designed so that anyone of any age would feel comfortable visiting. To top it off - they have free Internet! - great if you are traveling or even if you are local and want a quiet place to study or check your emails or Facebook. I've only tried simple food there - a good toasted sandwich which they happily produced despite having already closed the kitchen - and the cakes are yum. I tried the sticky date pudding slice on another visit and the carrot cake looks dense and moist - just how I like it. And now the best bit - come on!! NthTasmania is not really a place groaning with marvelous cafes - but Bruces is really up there with their coffee quality. The latté I had was great quality with lovely smooth milk - well up to Melbourne standards. If you are traveling through give it a try - it's on the coast road off Bass Highway on the way into Wynyard.
