'Manivela', Spanish for crank - one of the many intriguing details that you will miss if you do not give this great little spot the time that it deserves. 'Little' is the operative word when it comes to a description of staff space; but never the word, operative or otherwise, to define the soul of Crank. This would be closer to 'enorme'! The coffee is flavoursome; the service is personable and the selective treat offerings, have never failed to hit the spot. If you are lucky enough to be a return customer, you will be remembered, as will your order! So, I will return again, as warm and genuine pleasure to serve is a rare treat. If your experience at Crank is not the enjoyable one I describe, I can only think that you must be 'maniatico'!!

Went here on Saturday after the westend markets. Awesome little hole in the wall coffee shop with one of the friendliest barrista/owners around. The coffee was quite smooth with some rich chocolate flavours. I had a great chat with Juiliano the owner and was impressed to hear that the furniture had all been made by him. I'll definitely be returning next saturday after the markets again.

We recently stumbled across this little hole in the wall café called Crank Espresso Bar on Montague Road in West End. It’s located right next to the very large ActivCycle coaching/repair shop so you could imagine these guys would do ok from cyclists alone. Although the café is not actually part of the adjoining bike shop, there is a neat servery window providing easy access to an indoor seating area. I had a bit of a chat with the barista Alex, he told me the café had been there for about a year now. There’s lots of Di Bella paraphernalia all around, however the blend we had was an Elixir Espresso blend. I took a double shot latte. It was a bit too hot, but not drastically. After it cooled a bit, the flavour was actually very good – rich and chocolaty. The finish was a little rough, however the strong flavour was so satisfying that I didn’t really mind. Overall, a very tasty coffee. This is a pretty good option for a quick take-away if you’re in the area. They’re open bright and early ;)
