Colonna & Smalls deservedly gets all the attention in Bath, but I really like Society Cafe. They have this bigger place on Kingsmead, and a smaller spot on High Street. I find the coffee consistently good in both locations, with a good choice of blends, expertly prepared and never requiring sugar. Service is always very professional and friendly. The Kingsmead location has outdoor seating on the lovely square.
I'll start by saying that the waitress who looked after me was fantastic. I ordered a double ristretto, and as she served it up to me, she warned me that she strugggles a bit with ristrettos, but that if I wasn't satisfied, she would gladly replace it with a style she was more adept at making. The double ristretto was pretty good though, a nice medium consistency, like very warm honey. Not as thick as I'd like, but perfectly good. The flavour was rich and smooth, and the acidity was subtle enough that it accentuated, rather than overpowered the other flavours. The double espresso I ordered, on the other hand, was just like a long, very acidic version of the ristretto. This makes me wonder about the coffee you would normally get there, though I was pleased with the ristretto.
