beanhunter, i had such fucking high hopes for us, i thought you understood my spirit for socially-acceptable drug drinking, i thought anyone so idle and bourgeois as to actually rate cafes would at the very least discern decent coffee from the polished faux-chic surface it tries to impress. i could never understand how one failed to finish even a bad espresso, i mean it's so petit and painless, but at low down i could not manage it. i followed my wholesome fiori cup of cement with a pint of bleach just to rinse out my mouth and try to forget and by comparison, the bleach was rich in blueberry flavour and subtle in its intensity. there is plenty of bad coffee in perth, but never have i been so offended by a place that takes itself more seriously than i take myself. i am just perplexed (and glad i guess) that people on here enjoyed the maiming.

i have a tendency of gravitating towards places whom concern themselves solely with the enterprise of good coffee. of all places in perth, bossman lives up to this aim. the espresso is rich and weighted in demeanour, and is about as dark as the environment. i could not help but leave with the impression that the nocturnal setting of the cafe perfectly distills the character of the coffee. there is an aura of sincerity and warmth in what these guys have cultivated, from the antique spoons to the folksy interior. a serious place deserves a serious review.

standing room only represents the gates of mephistopheles for perth coffee; they have cultivated an axiom for new cafes to aspire towards and good cafes to exceed. existing in the purgatory between adequate and great espresso, standing room only is the kind of take-away staple i would only bother with when intersected en route elsewhere. service is responsive, the coffee palatable (coupled with sparkling water) and an atmosphere perfectly acclimatised for bearded agitated men in aprons. they are the medium on the scale to which everything compares; but i for one always did prefer the hot porridge.

cosily tucked away cafe with a charming set up serving very curious espresso. at times yearning, at times reserved, tying humblebee's coffee to a single definition is an elusive task. the first espresso was composed of a medium-dark body underlined with muted tropical and fruity zest. the second struck me as fluffier, creamier, more earthly. a unique contradictory experience but it would appear the coffee is unsure whether it should continue chasing its dewey-eyed ambition to become a broadway actress or to succumb to teaching primary school classes for a living.

forward-thinking like a good dystopian novel, addison & steele pride themselves on being purveyors of only the finest ostentation. it's the first cafe i've encountered with an ego of its own. but it is also i cafe i hate to love; the espresso is genuinely good in its process, overture and quality. a&s is renowned for their accessibility to alternative brewing methods, flanking the space with syphons, v60 beakers and instruments. the espresso shots are larger than standard, providing both a juicier body and a subtler acidity. putting their flamboyance aside, a&s addresses its mission of producing dignified espresso on a level of detail and competence rarely breached in perth.

bench solicits its atmosphere to the contemporary espresso drinker; reductive design and untreated concrete gratify my privileged middle-class aesthetic prejudices. the coffee is inconsistent but never poor. their single origins share astringent, sharp personalities that never fail to yield a pleasant afterglow. the resulting momentum scored me a fine for walking through a red light, the coffee is indeed ~that~ effective.

it has been exciting to witness the acceleration of this place from an embryo into a cosmopolitan machine. and despite its constant industrious hustle, willie wagtail have yet to sacrifice their reputation for first-rate service. greeted upon entry by a formidable pair of slayers, willie wagtail offer a dynamic choice between two blends that are subject to weekly rotation courtesy of local pound roasters. the espresso is mature and glowing in character. they are doing things right here, hopefully they manage to sustain their high pitch.

blessed to have a cafe that consistently delivers near-religious experiences within a stones throw of my studio. an apt social venue too if you aren't claustrophobic or allergic to terrariums. the espresso dances on the tightrope between being feather-like and structured. always luscious, always rewarding.

solid specialist coffee from trusty local roasters axil and cartel. the sophisticated wooden finish, lack of natural light and angular dim lamps made for a great incubation chamber; although this may not always be desirable in terms of the caffeinated experience. there is a certain grace lacking... that said, lb2 is much more impressionable than its big sister.

contrary to some of the other reviews, once you excuse the awkward navigation to your table, the gimmicky theme excelled the coffee. the single origin was bold and fruity in character but fails to match the calibre of their competitors.

major biz happening here. these guys aren't about half measures. premo espresso. consistent, refined, robust el salvadorian coffee dominated by saccharine honey flavours with subtle floral and plummy undertones. nitrogenated cold brew and ice tea on tap. wild chinese black teas on the flip. open warehouse facility with a sizeable roasting enterprise in operation out the back. the staff were informed and keen to engage my interest with a brief guided tour. serious joint to be reckoned with, highly recommended for the pregnant and faint at heart.

yeah, okay, perfect rating, the only rating i hate to surrender but it is without-doubt earned. patricia caters to everything i could ever ask for in the cafe experience. the attention to detail in this standing-room only cafe is unsurpassed. the coffee? transcendental. both espresso options on offer were divine. their seasonal blend was intricate and multi-faceted in flavour (cherry, molasses, even hints of tobacco) - and the seven seeds colombian s.o. was woolly, lucid and colourful. you could taste the love. the pour-over had the levelled complexity of fine polished green tea. great resonating aftertaste. wicked closed-eye-visuals. dilated pupils, dry mouth and tremors to follow. after my first sip, i had to sit down my knees went weak from the euphoria. i'm under the impression i experienced a sensation akin to how kant describes the sublime. the service? exceptional. the smiles were so radiant i was almost convinced they were genuine. my empty soft ceramic cup was soon replaced with a complimentary array of fresh filters and pour overs. wonderful nurturing staff. i felt like i returned to the womb. all in all, a phenomenal experience. the highlight of melbourne. if i had to choose between patricia and sex...

unpretentious, welcoming space. impressive range of vegan/health-conscious food. coffee was syrupy and pungent with a solid stone-fruit character. nothing better to follow up your delirious three day steroid binge at the 24hr sweatbox gym next door.
