RandalJ reviewed Two Before Ten
Was keen to check out what Jarrod and the boys had been up to, and they did not dissapoint. Great service - friendly and informative. Great coffee - had a double ristretto Kenya SO. And I love the fitout, got to watch Sam roast while enjoying my coffee and having a chat. Great to see the Canberra coffee scene doing so well.
RandalJ reviewed Ona Coffee House
First stop on a Canberra trip. I've tried Ona beans previously, so was keen to see the flagship store. When I arrived I was immediately greeted and given directions on how to order. I always appreciate a high level of service like this. Coffee was prepared excellently, and the two bean blend was well balanced. Love the fitout, definitely worth a visit. Although being a roaster I would have liked it if there were more beans on offer. Great job guys, thanks!
RandalJ reviewed Pablo and Rusty's Lane Cove
On a hunt to find good coffee while visiting my sister in Sydney recently. A line of Roburs and Synessos caught my eye. Fitout is great, I love the old looking brickwork, and lighting fixtures made of milk bottles. Service was quick, informative, and friendly. Tried a double ristretto of a Guatemalan Antigua that was delicious, so had another and grabbed some beans to take away. Well done, looking forward to visiting again :)
RandalJ reviewed thecoffeebean
I really like where the Martha Street shops are heading. Lots of little boutique stores, cafes and restaurants. We had seen the coffee bean being fitted out, so were looking forward to trying it out. The fitout is minimalist, but I think done well. Martha Street has a nice 'village' feel to it, so the outdoor setting works well here too. The service we recieved was warm and friendly, and helped create a relaxed atmosphere. The coffee was unfortunately dissapointing. A dark roast, so very bitter, and the milk was way too hot. But as I'm finding with a lot of suburban cafes - this seems to suit their regular clientele. The coffee bean has loads of potential, but the coffee is currently letting them down.
RandalJ reviewed Hello Garry
I was in desperate need of a coffee on Australia day. Even though I haven't enjoyed my coffee from here previously, it was close to home, and open on the public holiday. For that they get extra points. Service was very friendly and quick, even though they were obviously busy. Coffee was still pretty average, far too hot, but perhaps that suits its regular clientele. Thanks for being open when everyone else was closed and thanks for the friendly service :)
RandalJ reviewed Five Sugars
I was quite excited to hear about five sugars opening. I love this strip at Wooloongabba, and have long thought there was a market for high quality specialty coffee here, with the competition only offering Merlo, Genovese, and Di Bella. So to hear that Saint would now be available here was exciting. After reading reviews on beanhunter, and having Adam Thompson and Bobbles reccomend it, we went to check it out at lunch time. At first approach I liked what I saw, a shiny GB5, and the multi-color ACF cups to drink from. All sitting on a rustic looking counter. Great start! The barista had a a couple of people in the store - not drinking coffee, but trying on clothes etc. and she was happily helping them out. When she came take our order I got quite offended, as the smiles and friendly service did not extend to us, and the service we recieved was gruff and almost unwilling. I'd like to think she may have been having a bad day, but since she had been quite happy with the previous customers, I can only assume that this was an aversion to serving us. Coffee was acceptable. I guess the business is still young and finding it's feet, based on that they deserve another try, but with good coffee and excellent service nearby, you'd hope they remedy this soon.
RandalJ reviewed Bellissimo
Adam's review was on the money. Good - Fitout, service, atmosphere. Love the roaster going in the corner. Service was fast and friendly, and the place just looks cool. Bad - coffee... Doppio was overextracted, very bitter, which hid any characteristics of the beans. Double ris flat white was better, but still average. I like the idea of what Bellissimo is trying to do, I think the coffee that i had let down the rest of the show. Beans looked like a dark (perhaps over) roast. Information on where the coffee comes from (from what I could read) is broad and vague. Are they estate beans? If so where? Or are they a generic wholesale bean? (hence the limited information.) The boom of micro roasters has set the bar quite high in terms of information and quality. Bellissimo doesn't quite get there, but I hope they can, as I said - I like what they're trying to do.
RandalJ reviewed Toby's Estate Espresso Bar
Checked this place out with Bobbles and Adam Thompson today. Very nice fitout, attentive friendly staff, lots of retail goods to look at. Looking forward to seeing the roaster in action and some cupping nights. Both espresso's I had (Woolloomooloo blend, and the Sustainablility blend) were good. I particularly liked the Sustainablilty blend, however I do feel that the extraction was perhaps not as good as it could be. That said, we also had a syphon of a Colombian Supremo, and this was spot on - very smooth apricot flavours. And great to see more brew bars appearing in Brisbane. Definitely worth traveling for.
We decided to check out Shucked on the recommendation of Adam Thompson, and it certainly lived up to his praises. I was also interested to see how the Blackstar coffee would come out, having been disappointed on a recent trip to Blackstar - and my double ris flat white was close to perfect, well done. Fitout is cool, atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, as is the service. A great find if you're nearby. Well done Shucked!
RandalJ reviewed Cup Specialty Coffee
I really enjoyed today's visit to Cup. My espresso of their five star blend was great, although I didn't feel as though it was as good as a flat white, even with a double ristretto, still - great coffee - and you can tell these guys are passionate about what they do. The service today was friendly and quick, and the shop always has a 'cool' buzz about it. A definite 'must visit' on the Brisbane coffee circuit.
RandalJ reviewed Blackstar Coffee
I don't want to be a hater... but our coffee this morning was fairly average. My espresso was less than memorable, and we tried a cold press only to find out it was pre mixed with maple syrup. (I guess we could've checked, but were working under the assumption that it would be straight cold press) On the upside, service was friendly and efficient, (although coffee did take a little while to make it out), and the atmosphere was welcoming.
RandalJ reviewed The Corner Store Cafe
I was very impressed by The Corner Store. We were greeted at the door by nearly every staff member. Walking to our table a caught a glimpse of the Synesso being worked frantically - I was keen to see the results, and the guys definitely delivered. Both our coffees were made excellently. The fitout was very chic. And the semi outdoor seating gave us a nice view of the herb garden and a little sun to warm us up. The place had a very vibrant atmosphere, and a nice buzz about it, even though the crowd seemed a little up market/snooty. Definitely worth a visit. Food, coffee, service and atmosphere was excellent. Overall the best cafe I've visited in Brisbane, well worth the trip.
Coffee was made very well, good extraction and texture in my piccolo. Bunker is a cool looking, small site. Being so small I would assume it should have a warm cosy atmosphere. When we visited there the shop was full with a few people outside waiting, yet if seemed dull and lifeless? And the customer service by the person taking orders was a bit lacking. Maybe it was an off morning? Good choice if you're in the area already, but parking can be a pain if you're driving, and since it's a popular site wait time for your coffee can take a little while if it's busy. Go - if you're nearby. Avoid - queues
Really enjoyed this place. Quite busy, and had a nice buzz about it. Excellent service, warm and friendly. Coffee temp was a little hot to my liking, extraction was good though. A very pleasant experience, I'll be back.
RandalJ reviewed Mugged Espresso Bar
Lots of reviewers praising or criticising this place with only one review, so we gave it a try. Service was quick and friendly, atmosphere is definitely lacking since the only place to sit is out on Oxford Street, but the staff offer nice enough banter. Coffee was made well, my only complaint is that they only do take away. I would much prefer to drink out of a ceramic cup. Go - if you want a take away. Avoid - if you want to sit and enjoy your coffee in a ceramic cup. (on a last note, my girlfriend ordered a soy cap and was quite happy with her coffee. Good temperature and texture)
RandalJ reviewed Ave Cucina and Coffee Bar
Went here for lunch, service was great, on the verge of over attentive - which suggests they've heeded the last few reviews, although our second round of coffees took longer than you would expect. The cafe was half full and had a nice buzz about it, amd the DiBella coffee was made well. From a coffee point of view it seems like a safe choice, but food is definitely their strong suit. Worth a visit if you're nearby.
RandalJ reviewed The Gallery Soho
Excellent service, milk texture was great, blend of coffee not so much. And while I like the outdoor seating, Old Cleveland road is way too busy. You do get a shortbread with your coffee - which I like. Menu looks interesting. I'll give it another try
RandalJ reviewed Brown Dog Cafe
Brown Dog was very good. Service was great, and I like the fitout inside. Coffee was made well also, although I do find Di Bella a little boring. With so many boutique roasters out there I find it a shame when cafe's like this, which have so much personality, settle for the generic. A good experience none the less. Worth a visit if you're in the area.
RandalJ reviewed Park Bench Espresso Bar
Everything here was 'good', not a bad experience, not exactly mind blowing either, and it was nice to finally try Saint Coffee. I haven't worked my way around Bulimba yet, but Park Bench is a safe choice if you're in the area. Avoid - mums with prams...
