There is an ever growing number of cafes strewn across the side streets of Melbourne's inner suburbs. While most work on a quirky, revamped Victorian house with an alternative (read: done to death) feel, Backstreet does not. Instead, it is fresh, new, and exciting.
A dark, almost bar-like feel is contrasted with windows to spare. The service is attentive, gentle and professional.
The menu requires thought to process with many ingredients I had to google. The end result though is a sensational modern twist on classic breakfast favorites.
The coffee itself was good: mild and creamy.

Came here with a friend today.
Enjoyed my gingerbread waffles, although they were extremely sweet.
Coffee was tasty. Latte and espresso were both decent.
Service friendly, attentive and far from pretentious.
Bright room and courtyard made for a relaxing atmosphere.
Crowned as Melbourne's best cafe by The Age, I expected more.
The atmosphere is pleasant but not special. As is service.
My piccolo latte was strong, dark, earthy and nutty. Not the sweeter, easily palatable style blend on offer at so many new cafes. It was well made with nice art, but I've had better.
A perfectly good place for a coffee, but not Melbourne's best.
A refreshingly pleasing new-comer, Middle Fish brings a fusion of Thai and third generation cafe to Melbourne cafe scene.
Located perilously close to Seven Seeds, this warehouse conversion offers more than most. An open feel with wrought-iron decorative work, indoor plants and Asian inspired accessories make Middle Fish warm and inviting.
The menu has little in common with others: 'chrunchy' omelette with mussel, for instance, is one of three thai breakfasts available. It was surprisingly light, yet satiating.
Coffee was sweet, smooth and rich. Above average.
The only slight downside w...
Been here quite a few times now.
Whilst I can't disagree that cheap beers and pizzas in the courtyard doesn't sound like a pretty nice way to spend an evening, I feel as a destination for caffeination, this place has gone downhill.
Service remains slow and awkward, food prices have gone up (although $8 eggs with $1 sides is a bargain) and the coffee is inconsistent and often watery and tastes a bit off.
I don't think I'll be back for coffee.
Beautiful interior and nice addition to a slowly improving Glenferrie Rd, but sadly it didn't live up to expectations.
A 40 minute wait for tables didn't get things off to a good start, and poor service helped bring the rating down.
Coffee was pleasant, but at $4, and with little special in the brew, I was underwhelmed.
It's relatively new, so I expect they'll iron out some flaws. Watch this space.
