An old favourite with new tricks!
Moulin Noir has switched coffee from Piazza D'Oro to St Ali, and it shows. Competition from Third Wave accros th road seems to have resulted in a search for better quality.
Meals are consistent and good quality. I got a sneak peek at the Spring menu, and it looks good, with more options for lunch.
Serving 5 Senses coffee from a Synesso, I had high hopes when I walked in, although these were swiftly moderated when I noticed the dried milk calling the steam wand home.
Coffee arrived with the ubiquitous rosetta, however 2 minutes of settling revealed very large bubbles in the microfoam.
The food was a step above, beautifully presented french toast with chantilly cream and raspberry compote.
After sitting and watching I saw the barista take over from whoever made my coffee. Ordering a second coffee confirmed this, and gave me bliss in a cup.
Coffee had a great degree of variation. I had a double shot skim latte, came out looking great, but then the girl opposite me on the communal table ordered a weak latte and it had about an inch of microfoam/froth on the top. Rather disappointing.

I have always found the staff courteous and prompt, with the barista never slacking as suggested above.
As for the coffee itself, I find it, if not outstanding, then at least acceptable. I am the type of person who cannot drink coffee too hot, yet have never had issues with the temp of a drink from 57.
Located at the southern end of Bay St, seven:am is a calm and relaxed little cafe. Eschewing the popular open kitchen layout for something more conventional maintains the calm of the cafe proper. The only sounds are of light jazz or pop music playing as background noise, accompanied by the conversation of the other patrons.
The owner and main barista Jason is both accomodating and friendly. Service is good, but is better on the weekends when more floor staff are on.
The coffee used is Coffee Supreme made on a 2 group machine. Coffee is consistent and always ground fresh to order. Espr...
Ceres truly is an oasis in the city. Sitting on the verandah of the cafe, you feel like you have been plucked out of Melbourne and onto a farm. The menu has clear markings next to all items to indicate whether the food is organic, vegan, gluten free or wheat free.
The atmosphere is very relaxed and bohemian, there is no rush to finish your coffee and leave, just relax and enjoy your time.
The coffee served is from local roaster Coffee Supreme.
