Revisited Taipei in February (2011) and decided to check in again at Trilobite.
I had heard they changed hands but that didn't deter me.
Same layout, but completely different vibe. Very quiet on my visit. Menu had changed - not only in content, but in format (very tacky, laminate peeling at the edges, no information about the coffee). We asked the waitress where they get their coffee from and we were informed that it was a secret. Coffees were labeled only as 1 through to 12, with some elementary flavour descriptors beside them. No roaster information, no mention of origin.
Very poor...
LAMILL was my first coffee stop in the US. It had a good reputation online for both food and coffee, so it sounded like a solid choice for my first brunch in LA.
Venue was a bit over-the-top compared to what I have become accustomed for specialty coffee shops, with bright red walls (and matching Clovers), crocodile skin seats, chandeliers and a large black and white mural on the wall. My guess was that this was very Hollywood-style (although we were actual in the sleepy suburb of Silverlake).
Service was formal - similar to a good restaurant, with a designated waitress tending our every ...
I love Coffee Alchemy.
Owners Clare & Hazel are two of the most passionate coffee professionals I have ever met. Clare can explain more about a coffee by a mere facial expression and gesture than most could spend a lifetime writing. However, equal to this is Hazel's ability to write so romantically and poetically about the bean we love (and that which she obviously does too). Her writings are what drove me to make my way over to that obscure part of Sydney on my recent brief weekend up there and can be found on the Coffee Alchemy blog.
First up, we had 3 pourover coffees of Clare's choo...
I've been meaning to write a review of Three Bags Full for a while now. I went there on their third day of operation and the place was packed, on a Wednesday. Set down Nicholson St in a fairly residential zone of Abbotsford, I remember driving past the site a few months ago and thinking it would be the perfect spot for a cafe. This part of Abbotsford was clearly craving good coffee.
Although slighly hectic at my first visit, things seem to be under control on follow up visits with my girlfriend and then again with an international visitor. Either way, the enjoyment of my coffee was not hin...
Market Lane Coffee opened a little over a week ago.
I had high expectations, since it was a new venture by Fleur Studd of Melbourne Coffee Merchants - importers of some of the finest coffees to reach this part of the world - but my expectations were far, far exceeded. The fitout and branding is... with lack of a better word, perfect...the staff are knowledgeable and friendly and, most importantly, the coffee is incredible.
They offer a Seasonal Espresso Blend, which I assume changes every 3 months (possibly inspired by Square Mile). They use organic, un-homogenised milk, organic sugar sou...
The coffee culture in the Melbourne CBD is out of control!
After Maltitude changed hands and before BBB opened up on Little Bourke, there was no such thing as specialty coffee in the city. Now it's getting like you're always 5 minutes from a quality double ristretto - Brother Baba Budan, Cafenatics QV, Eclipse, Dancing Goat, Social Roasting Company, Brood Box and now Cup of Truth.
Cup of Truth is found down the subway near the end of Degraves St (just past the waffle/baguette shop). Nice little shop. Coffee care of Five Senses, machinery care of Synesso and heritage care of Vue de Monde.

The Maling Room is run by some of the most dedicated and passionate coffee professionals in the industry. Andrew Lew is a perfectionist and exceptionally talented behind the machine. I'm surprised to see negative feedback towards The Maling Room because I am sure a bad experience is the exception and assume that terrific coffee is the norm. We had some cakes, a bunch of lattes, a strong flat white and a double ristretto and all were magical - particularily the Indonesian Strong Flatty!
Keep up the good work TMR!
This morning I decided to check out Brood Box. I felt a little guilty knowing it was situated so close to BBB, but that heavy feeling of guilt lifted when I walked past and saw BBB packed, with a line 5 deep out of the door.
Strolling into Brood Box (previously McCulloch Gallery) I quickly realised I was the sole diner. Strange, given it has been advertised heavily through St Ali (and all the hype that goes along with that) and given the huge number of people willing to line up for coffee just around the corner. I ordered a double ristretto, sat down and had a look around at some of the artw...
