Thought I'd give Atomic a try again after their cafe expansion. It's the first time I've been back there in a couple of years - it used to be one of my favourite cafes, but went downhill...
First impressions: the new space looks great, very clean and modern, but still quite comfortable. The food has improved too - still counter food only (no kitchen), but good quality and well-presented.
They're doing something different with the coffee too - we had a tasting tray of three single origin coffees (Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Colombian & Brazilian) all made in a syphon. It's great to see that the fo...
Set at the back of a garden centre, the name of this cafe comes from two train carriages in which you can sit and look out over the duck pond. Over the last year or so, it has gone from being a bit old-ladyish and twee and has tried (mostly successfully) to be a bit more modern. Word of warning though - the seats in the carriages are still the original train seats, so they ain't that comfortable...
The service is generally pretty good, although on my last visit they lost my coffee order somewhere "in the system" and I had to chase it up after waiting 20 minutes. The coffee is not too bad and ...
Revel is what you expect in a cafe on K Rd - off-beat, slightly cramped, but with truckloads of personality. The furniture is a mix of op-shop stuff and items that may have been picked out of an inorganic collection, but it works really well. Our table was a Galaga arcade game, which took me back to my mis-spent youth...
The coffee was fair-trade and really good. I had a flat white and an espresso. The flat white was stronger than you normally get from a cafe, with heaps of flavour. It was just the right temperature and the milk was textured nicely. The espresso was just as good - thick crema...
Roasted Addiqtion used to be one of my favourites, but for various reasons I haven't been there in a year or so. I dropped in for brunch on the weekend and was really disappointed with what I found. What used to be a funky cafe, is now a fairly standard place - while they have retained the eclectic mix of tables, all the funky, comfortable seats have been replaced with uncomfortable, uniform black plastic chairs. The cool young staff seem to have been replaced by younger (and not-so-cool) types, with less attitude & personality.
I got a flat white and it was easily the worst coffee I had bee...
Easily the best coffee to be had in Australia. Tim the barista is obviously passionate about the coffee he prepares - to the point that he made and tipped out 3 shots before he served me one he was happy with the first time I went there.
Every cup is of a very high standard, has great flavour and mouth-feel. The last time I went there, Tim explained that the cooler weather had subtly changed the flavour of the shots - not something most Aussie baristas would talk about (or even know, unfortunately). His skill and knowledge shows in the quality of the coffee. Fully recommended!
The stall i...
There always seems to be a queue of people outside this hole-in-the wall cafe, so it must be good!
I ordered an espresso and a flat white. The espresso was excellent - I always appreciate it when the staff drop everything to deliver a shot as soon as it is made too. My flat white was also very good, nice flavour, texture and temperature.
I guess the only down side is that there is extremely limited seating and if you do sit down, you're right next to the queue, which feels a little awkward.
The staff are very friendly and the service is fast. Recommended, especially if you want a coffee on ...
Funky little cafe, great decor - especially the jerrycan lights. I ordered an espresso and a flat white. There was only one staff member in the place and he was pretty busy taking orders, making and delivering the coffees, but he was very friendly and super-efficient.
The espresso looked great, but was a little under-extracted, so didn't really deliver the full flavour it could have. The flat white, however, was excellent: great taste, texture and just the right temperature. I will definitely go back :)
Some of the poorest, most surly service I have ever received in a cafe. One of the staff couldn\'t even be bothered getting off the phone (obviously what she did last night was much more interesting than actually doing her job) to serve us and we had to wait for the other person to notice us so we could order.
The coffee was pretty average, over-extracted and tepid, but probably still better than most places in Darwin.
Food was OK, the sandwich was good, but the pastie went soggy in the microwave. Ever heard of pie warmers??
