If you're going to set up a cafe in close proximity to an existing one with a great reputation, you better have "do a bloody good job" in your business strategy. Sadly, the owner(s) of Black Gold Espresso does not appear to have considered this.
The cafe is locate on the corner of Epsom Road and Mentmore Avenue at Rosebery, less than 100m from the head office, roastery and cafe for Allpress Espresso. I was actually skipped a coffee at Allpress to try this place.
The space is clean, light, airy and modern. Approximated 20 average-sized cafe tables are generously-spaced inside and out. Some o...
Cafe is located in an office building foyer which doubles as an echo chamber. Rude and inept service from the counter staff. Filthy tables. The coffee (served in a paper cup with a dine-in lunch!) was drinkable. Just. You can do MUCH better if you're prepared to walk 500m down the road. Disappointing effort from the GG brand.

I can't understand how this place stays in business. So disappointing. I kid you not when I say that the first thing I purchased afterwards was a pack of chewing gum to get the taste out of my mouth.

Jonno, the manager and head barista, runs a pretty tight ship. A mixture of single origins and an amazing house blend are on offer. The focus is very clearly on quality espresso and you are generally treated to a great brew no matter what day of the week you turn up.
Food offerings, on the other hand, seem to be a little hit and miss. Pick the wrong day or wrong time of the day and the s...
Discovered this place thanks to Beanhunter.
Prices are definitely on the high side, even for Sydney CBD ($4.30 for a large takeaway with an extra shot).
The cafe has a cold, sterile feel inside and is not particularly welcoming. The indifferent attitude of the staff member who served me did not help bring any warmth to the experience.
GGs uses Allpress beans and the barista nailed an above-average quality shot. Would try these guys again if I'm down this end of Pitt Street.
Come for the AMAZING chocolate and give the coffee a miss. If you have to have a coffee, make it a long black, as they have an unfortunate tendency to superheat the milk to 9000°K and totally ruin the drink. Service can be a little patchy, especially when they're busy.

The limitations of the blend were exacerbated by the rookie(?) working the machine who made a flat white which looked like it had been produced with milkshake maker and tasted like it had come from the drip tray.
Stick to the orange juice.
It's just like it's parent at Camperdowm but with more space; a more chilled atmosphere; less hipsters; and lots of coffee extraction options (incl cold-drip). Highly recommended if you like Campos' middle-of-the-road house blend. Service is very fast and the smiles from the staff are always a welcoming sight.
