Penny Farthing is the latest addition to Northcote's High Street coffee scene. There's no obvious signage out front so it's easy to miss but keep an eye out for the macabre bike sculpture in the window and you'll know you've found the right spot. It's a cosy little cafe with a big communal table at the front of the cafe and a handful of small wooden tables inside and out. The beans are supplied by 5 Senses and there's a regular house blend in addition to varying single origins on offer at any one time. Living quite close to this roastery café, my living room is frequently filled with the inviting aroma of coffee beans on the roaster. The beans Blackstar roast are tasty and full of flavour but I have found lately that the quality of the coffee depends on which barista is working the machine, and this inconsistency has turned me off going there as frequently as I used to when I first moved to West End. I feel very fortunate to be living no more than 500m from this great café. The crew at Cup serve, hands down, the best coffee in Brisbane. The clean, minimalist interior makes for a fresh, no-fuss vibe, and allows your eye to be drawn to the impressive Slayer espresso machine on the counter and the Probat roaster taking pride of place at the back wall. The staff are always friendly, and produce consistently amazing coffee that looks and tastes great. It's hard not to order a second if you're sitting in!

If you're looking for something a little different in South Brisbane, then it's definitely worth paying a flying visit to the owner-operated Birds Nest Coffee & Collectables. You can find a perch inside among the interesting collection of vintage items on sale or outside on one of the few seats scattered around outside of the shop. The coffee is consistently good. They use an 8-bean blend with Ethopian Yirgacheffe as the dominant bean, which produces a beautiful full-bodied flavour. The milk in my lattes is always nicely textured and velvety, and the coffee is always at the right temperature t...
