Intially set up by Australian cooking legend Stephanie Alexander, the Richmond Hill Cafe and Larder came highly recommended. Situated on busy Bridge Rd, the cafe does breakfast and lunch and also has a 'cheese-room' attached. The service was friendly and prompt. Although it had an impressive menu, the coffee was a little disappointing. My latte was too hot and quite bitter. I'd been keen to give this place another go though.

The coffee here is one of the better sources of caffeine in Surrey Hills. It comes quickly and tastes good. My latte was smooth without any bitter aftertaste.
The only distracting thing about this cafe is the noise of the train line. This isn't so much of a problem on the weekend but during the week if you have an early brekky there are trains every 5 minutes or so.
I'm surprised at the less-than-positive reviews of Hush Hush! This cafe is a breakfast favourite of mine. I've found the staff to be consistently friendly and helpful (if, at times, a little forgetful). The coffee is better than most in busy Camberwell. I've had a few delightful chats with the head chef who is always seeking to improve his menu. The french toast is a must-try.

Despite the amount of cafes that Maling Rd boasts, I think the Maling Room is one of the only places that serves decent coffee that is consistent. The atmosphere isn't great though - the high ceilings make it noisy and of a weekend it's always cheek-by-jowl. I'd suggest getting take away coffee from here and drinking it somewhere more picturesque - perhaps the lovely Canterbury Gardens around the corner.

It's often crowded but does one of the better coffees in Camberwell. There is no table service which is a pain if you're there in a big group, but of an evening it is often less crowded which helps. There is good selection of desserts and ice cream for those post-movie munchies.

It's mainly set up for takeaway though, so perhaps this is forgivable. However, the vanilla slice here is great - they've won a few awards for it and it's worth popping in to try one.

The staff are friendly and attentive and the service is usually fast. However, while there IS a cute courtyard out the back, last time I sat out there my brekky was interrupted by some very aggressive wasps!
