Mecca tends to get rave reviews from a lot of people - I like it, but find it a bit inconsistent at times. Coffee is a great blend though haven't always found the milk creamy; Service is generally pretty friendly (in a brisk kind of way) but can also be a bit abrupt (in a brisk kind of way! ;o)

Great location on King St about a block from the Apple Store and plus points for a decent cafe in Sydney that opens on Saturday. Right near the traffic (ie. immediately beside a busy road) which won't be everyone, but suits their image.

I think it's worth the fuss. Have been here on numerous random occasions - basically it seems to be run by a group of coffee fanatics eg. one guy became quite annoying, lecturing me to buy a grinder every time I asked to have beans ground for my Gaggia machine at home (to be fair though, I did in fact buy one shortly after!)

Food is great if a touch on the pricey side, and have never had anything less than a perfect coffee there, either in the way they make it or the blend they use. Just sensational quality.

Just tracked down this place looking for a half decent coffee in the between-Christmas-and-New-Years lull ... wasn't sure if the queue outside was due to its quality of the lack of alternative options!

As it happens, looks like the queue is because of quality. Very friendly person on the front counter, coffee made quickly - very smooth latte, nutty flavour - and even though she was already serving another customer, the lady on the counter still made an effort to call out a "have a nice day" to us. Noticed she also made chit chat with tourists about where they had been and were going - great...

Tinderbox is on the main street in Islington, not too far from the train station and serving pretty decent coffee on every occasion. They do have a reasonable menu as well, plus a lot of packaged food and drink also ... staff not too friendly (in the trendy sense) but they ARE efficient, so it doesn't really matter.

There are lots of cubby holes to get lost in, from the bar at the front (with huge glass for fishbowl effect) through to little alcoves at the back if you want privacy. Best of all they get a load of newspapers in every day, so if you're needing a fix of the UK's great writing ...

Tinto was my coffee refuge in London from 2002-2005, providing great coffee and fantastic muffins baked in-house - run briskly and efficiently by Paul Arbelaez from Bogota, Colombia, who's been in charge of the staff since 2001.

They expanded in about 2007 and additionally now have a South Kensington branch, so it's fair to say their popularity has been increasing. They tend to get packed at the usual times (mid-morning, lunch and weekends especially) so can be a bit crowded, but generally there's room enough.

The Fulham Palace Rd is also in an excellent location nearby to Bishops Park, ...

Kaffebrenneriet

Kaffebrenneriet is in fact a coffee chain based in Oslo; the Norwegian Starbucks if you will, only with quality coffee and a menu ranging from lunch options to numerous sweets and pastries fresh from their inhouse bakery.

The atmosphere of each place tends to be brisk and efficient, with the decor full of wood and chrome - typical Scandinavian minimalism making for a great work or tourist refuel, not to mention an opportunity to people watch the Oslo natives.

Kaffebønna is an awesome find way up in the Arctic Circle, in the university town of Tromsø, Norway. The coffee is silky smooth and expertly made, with high quality food to complement it - probably the only drawback of the place is it's only daytime hours, so not the sort of place to while away hours, but still a nice oasis on a sunny day to watch Scandinavian life passing by.
