Tant Pour Tant

Tant pour Tant is a cute little patisserie in a small out of the way strip home to a number of slightly upmarket cafes and shops.

Coffee isn't astounding, but the milk is well textured and presented.

The service is friendly and professional, and they have some amazing stuff if you have a sweet tooth.

Mojo Music Coffee Hair

Mojo is very much your standard coffee shop, with not much setting it apart from franchise cafes, other than the fact it shares shop space with a record store and a hairdresser.

The latte I had was larger than it should have been (a bit of a trend in the north of Tasmania it seems) and resulted in a somewhat weak, generally inoffensive coffee.

Food was the standard fare, and service a little clunky with staff having trouble hearing over the music in the record store.

Cafe Culture

Nice enough staff and food, but cafe culture doesn't do melbourne roasted Jasper coffee justice.

Espresso was thin, watery, and bitter, and lattes, while not served in an oversized glass like most cafes up north, weren't particularly well textured.

Island Espresso

I was somewhat disappointed after reviews pegged this to be the best coffee in Hobart.

My first coffee, a latte, was not particularly well textured, and the coffee base cutting through with a bitterness indicative of either over extraction or machine needing a good back flush. Out of fairness I stayed for an espresso, which I had hoped would restore their reputation, but unfortunately was barely drinkable.

Aside from the lovely staff, this was a real disappointment. Hopefully I got them on an off day, but that's why these things are averaged I guess.

Villino Espresso

I caught Villino on a Monday morning around 10, so avoided much of the crowd, and settled in for a few coffees.

Atmosphere was warm and intimate, the dark wood paneling and sunken shop space made for a relaxing start to the day.

The single of the day, a Kenyan AA, came up beautifully as an espresso, extracted slightly short giving it a nice sweet finish and syrupy consistency.

This was followed up by a latte in their Synergy blend, which had good flavor punching trough the milk. The milk it's self was smooth though a little thin for my liking.

Very much a solid bet for a great coffee in H...

Retro Cafe

While not having amazing coffee, I felt like lounging here for most of the day.

Retro seems like more of a cafe for the locals than the tourist crowd that frequent this part of town, the decor is kitch, the staff have personalities, and the place has a very casual vibe.

The coffee, while reasonably textured isn't all that on the flavor side, having been somewhat over-extracted, but not heinously so.

If you're looking for coffee, there are a few other places nearby who will serve you better, but I'd happily spend an afternoon here unwinding.

Machine Laundry Cafe

A reasonable sized cafe/restaurant in a bustling square, machine laundry stands out as the more laid back and funkier option with it's neon signage and retro furniture.

The service is friendly and attentive, and while the coffee is good, this is more of a chill out and have a late breakfast kind of place.

Late was reasonably textured and had a pleasant finish, but didn't blow my socks off.

In any case, a great pick, and great choice for a bite...

A nice retreat from the busyness of markets on a Saturday, Dr. Coffee is a quiet, cosy, and mildly eclectic cafe with an obvious focus on coffee.

The COE Honduras on offer produced a sweet but rich espresso and was generally well poured.

Food on offer was simple but good, and the service was friendly if not a little brief.

All in all a good cafe with the style and substance of many a melbourne hole in the wall.
