I was a little concerned seeing the single origin unrefined sugar on the table that we were in for a bit of coffee wankery, but was relieved to find that really Market lane is young, fresh, and excited about the Melbourne coffee scene. The staff here are keen to tell you about what they do and they definately take pride in it. The seasonal blend on offer was again 80% brazil, but came up nicely as an espresso with sweet citrus notes, and made for a surprisingly stand out latte. Milk wasnt fantastically textured but coupled fantastically with the dull acidity of the coffee. This was partly due to market lanes decision to use a restricted double shot as standard in their milk coffees.
The service was fantastic, with knowledgable and friendly staff, and the atmosphere although rather sparsely furnished was very mellow and made for a very enjoyable experience.
Delicious. Yum. The milk these guys use in their coffees is awesome. Loving the big blackboard, a great feature! These guys know what they are doing. This is one of the best lattes I have had in Melbourne. My visit was quite early and the singles weren't available at that time, but their blend was super... Keep up the good work!

One of the new players in Melbourne's growing scene. These guys are the ones who have done it best.
Attention to detail is second to none.
Market Lane Coffee is a little gem in the Prahran Market. It took me a while to find this place but when I did I was not disappointed. The coffee is roasted fresh on site once a week and they run a seasonal blend and a few singles. When I rocked up they only had the Seasonal Espresso Blend on offer which was was 80% Brazil & 20% Kenya. First up I had a double ristretto piccolo that was prepared to perfection; the first mouth taste was really florally and then followed by a nice rich sweetness. The milk didn't distract from the coffee and if anything only gave me a slightly different profile. One of the best Piccolos I've had! Second up I had a ristretto and this time I could taste more of the "soft Grapefruit" flavours written in the blend description followed by a lovely sweet acidity that left me buzzing! Absolutely fantastic coffee!
Don't go here expecting a feed as there is only coffee on offer and a few little pastries. But if your needing a out of the ordinary coffee experience then you MUST pay Market Lane a visit.
Not many places seem to live up to there hype. Commonly you find places never reach your expectations simply because the people who tell you don't know what the hell they're talking about eg people who like snow pony! But market lane rewards peoples faith in bean hunters. Don't give up people although snow pony may leave you suicidal, Market Lane is like coffee heaven! The place is clean, light and God is a 28 second extraction of life elixer. Everything about Market Lane is simply heavenly!
Reviewed by: JazzyT | Date: 13th February 2010 via iPhone App | Report this reviewThe best textured latte I've ever had! The staff are all too happy to explain each bean and coffee type. Their friendliness makes the experience a pleasure. You may either choose a coffee from the espresso machine or what is known as a 'pour over' where the hot water is left to sit with the beans, theoretically producing the truest flavour of the bean. Tasteful music plays in the background and the well lit, spacious cafe makes it a crime not to sit down and enjoy more than one coffee.

They only do coffee and they do it well.
Given the hype, I had to visit here!
The atmosphere is lovely. Windows everywhere make the place extremely bright. Combine this with soft colours and pale woods, the feel here is warm and friendly. Gentle music in the background helps further. I could have sat here for hours.
I was greeted happily by the barista who proceeded to explain the coffees available for pour over today. He suggested I try a Yirgacheffe from Ethiopia. My wife was after something cold, and, to my surprise, he suggested the pour over be served over ice.
I must say, the iced Yirgacheffe was one of the nicest coffees I've ever had. It far surpassed the hot pour over, which paled in comparison. The robust complexity of flavours was truly amazing. You must try one!
Pop into Market Lane next time you're at the market (or the Aldi next door).
Going to Market Lane was a high priority for me on my recent trip to Melbourne.
I had a short mac followed by a piccolo latte. Both were amazing. The short mac had a rich crema, was bold and had a sweet after taste. The piccolo was of similar high standard for its taste, however there was an average attempt at some latte art.
Unfortunately Market Lane doesn't serve any food other than small sweets, so don't go expecting to have a meal with your coffee.
Overall, this is a great spot for awesome coffee.
Market Lane Coffee opened a little over a week ago.
I had high expectations, since it was a new venture by Fleur Studd of Melbourne Coffee Merchants - importers of some of the finest coffees to reach this part of the world - but my expectations were far, far exceeded. The fitout and branding is... with lack of a better word, perfect...the staff are knowledgeable and friendly and, most importantly, the coffee is incredible.
They offer a Seasonal Espresso Blend, which I assume changes every 3 months (possibly inspired by Square Mile). They use organic, un-homogenised milk, organic sugar sourced from Costa Rica and (as is becoming the standard these days) a varying coffee of the day alternative. They offer a number of coffees as either pourover or through the Clover. They apparently hold tastings Thursdays and Fridays at 11am (of which I hope to attend soon) and they sell both coffee beans and coffee equipment. They even hand out little postcards with every bag of coffee bought, explaining the history of the bean (location, varietal and flavour characteristics).
They're not revolutionising the coffee industry, but they may just be perfecting it.
