One of the best Auburn coffee places, Home Dining Room's new look (after closing down due to a fire) with antique china, old school reading books and friendly staff, make it a nice way to spend the morning. The menu is extensive for such a small place and is open breakfast, lunch and tea! Worth a visit.

Since the fire late 2010 the refurb has given a breath of life into the cafe. Unfortunately the coffee has suffered a little since. It might be a grind setting or perhaps it's the barista who has left, but the strength is lacking. Overall the small batch beans are a lovely balanced flavour with a good constancy. Ask for it strong unless you like it weak. The owner is friendly and tells bad jokes, and there's a local who reads the trivia questions out most mornings which is always entertaining whilst waiting for the brew.

Home dining room is somewhat akin to a spot at the kitchen table, making for a comfortable and relaxed experience. As it is rather small this atmosphere can dissapate with larger crowds but most of the customers tend to be out for a quiet breakfast so it's rarely too noisy.
Unfortunately despite it's charms and quite nice food, the coffee here I've found to be below par and the focus certainly isn't on the coffee.
Great friendly cafe, coffe was smooth and easay drinking, attractive art, and served on time even though they seemed very busy. Great food sets this placve apart, nice to go to a cafe where it s not JUST about the coffee.
The Barrista tells me they use Small Batch coffee roasted at the Auction rooms in North Melbourne (good to see they support boutique roasters!!)

If you wanted a relaxed, modern, homely and wonderful little place to visit in Hawthorn, then this is the place. Nothing like other cafes in the area, Home shows off old-style china, stunning photography on the walls and an overall homely atmosphere.
The service is smiling and joking, just cheeky enough to make you laugh, without intruding on your conversation.
The coffee itself was slightly bitter, but not to its detriment, and quite strong. It wasn't as creamy as it could have been, but it was overall quite nice.
To top it all off, there's a truly wonderful-looking breakfast, lunc...
