Ellery & Co is tucked away quietly in a secluded part of Church St in West Hawthorn. If you didn't know it was there, you'd miss it, which is a shame as their coffee is really quite good.
The place has a nice light atmosphere, with some vintage decor giving it a slightly homey feel. The staff are friendly, and the magic flat white I drank was very smoothly made - just the right temperature for drinking, no bitterness and certainly not in need of sugar. If you're in that part of Hawthorn/Richmond/Kew, worth a drop-in for a visit.
(Can't speak for their food, as I've not tried it)
I only just came across this place recently which is surprising as it's only a few blocks near my house.
When I first found it, I was excited, hoping it would be as delightful as the coffee joint just up the road but the few times I've been there, I was pretty disappointed with it unfortunately.
The coffee is fairly ok, but the staff are generally not very nice, and from who I think is the manager, he was always quite silly and rude to me and my girlfriend who were simply trying to enjoy a nice cup.
Just an unenjoyable vibe, I hope I was just there on some off days.
Might try again.
Finally, we have a local around the corner with decent coffee for just $3!
There are plenty of tasty treats to go with your caffeine hit although be warned that they are little inconsistent. They opened in late '09, but the staff here are walking the line beautifully of cool but friendly.
Warning: The food can be a little weird - black wild rice porridge anyone?
Now open for dinner too.
