A cute atmosphere with old world books hanging from modern fittings sets expectations high. Sadly, they aren't met.
Staff were unnecessarily short in their dealings with us. We ordered flat whites and lattes, but when coffees came out, staff said 'oh well, there's no difference... Read more
My favourite place to come with a friend on the way to work friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere and above all great coffee.
1 Skinny Cappuccino
Amazing fruit toast! Worth travelling for. Latte\'s and flat whites have been great for me, I can\'t comment on the straight espresso or long blacks but the milk has always been rich and creamy and perfectly blended on my numerous visits
An interesting cafe just around the corner from the degraves St strip, journal is quieter, more spacious than the little hole in the wall cafes you find in this part of the world.
Two communal tables take pride of place in the centre of the room, bookshelves suspended overhead, and a... Read more
Good fitout, good food but the coffee and the staff were lack lustre yesterday :(
the coffee is good but nothing spectacular. limited breakfast menu but the atmosphere is great for catching up with friends
I really live journal. Great lay out. The staff aren't the friendliest, but hey, it's quite near Degraves so standoffish service is somewhat expected. The coffee is great and the soy chai latte's are delicious if you've already od'd on coffee for the day!
Very tasty coffee. Had a long black that was rich and mellow and not a hint of bitter/rubbishness. The food was well delicious and would make me want to return. Don't know if I agree with the poor service reviews. The waiters were plenty nice. Not obnoxious at all.
One of those places that used to be great when the owner was working, but has gone downhill fast since his apparent " retirement ". Still full though for some reason.
As mentioned by other reviewers, the staff seem too cool to serve you and would rather stand around massaging each other!... Read more
I do love the location and atmosphere . Coffee is good when it's good...but unfortunately not too consistent.
2 Soy Flat Whites
Journal has a great library-style vibe and nice enough staff, however their coffee was pretty rubbish - the long black was the size of a cap and the late was watery. Would go back for the food though!
Staff are definitely too cool for school here, the giddy eyed wait staff are too busy fixing their attire than taking your order especially if its takeaway. The coffee is extremely inconsistant ... a real hit or miss scenario. Don't bother wasting your hard earned coin here its definately worth... Read more
Great atmosphere not so great coffee. This lil hideout in flinders ln. has great potential to be a coffee haven but falls short in a cpl of ways.
1) the coffee has a nice mellow nutty flavor but the milk was not even close to decent temp.
2) staff seem friendly but how... Read more
Poor coffee and pathetic service.
This is one of my favourite cafes; I used to visit every morning for my first coffee of the day. Journal has a ‘library type’ funky feel to it and is generally busy in the morning which is the only time of day I’ve visited. The breakfasts are minimal in terms of offerings but the quality is...
