I couldn't let my latest visit pass without a mention on Beanhunter. I dropped in for a quick coffee, and was delighted to find a selection of Ethiopian single origins from Ninety Plus available. I was like a kid in a candy store. The espresso couldn't have wet my palate fast enough- and I was in... Read more

Got a tip about this place, and boy were we glad. If more of the eastern suburbs were saturated with this kind of superior coffee-and-food combo, there'd be less need to drift closer into the CBD.
Roasting in-house is obviously a good first sign, as was the variety of beans on sale... Read more
Coffee is consistently good and staff are always friendly.
Great coffee, good food and improved service.
I went here this afternoon with a few friends for a few quick coffees. The Maling Room always serves great coffee!
1 Flat White, 1 Piccolo
I've come back to this joint a few times. Gonna have to eat my words and say "I would travel for the coffee..and the beans." I rate the place. Haven't tried their long mac. Will get on it next time. Solid soy mocha as well (shameless admission).
After a years absence we returned to the Maling Room which was formerly the Canterbury (technically the correct reference to this heritage listed building) Post Office. The huge stained glass windows from its formers identity, are now it's prominent decor feature. The Cafe was just as busy, the... Read more
A very enjoyable coffee to be had here! Nice old post office building, nice feel to the place.
Gorgeous space (possibly the prettiest cafe in Melbourne) and equally stunning coffee.
Owner Andrew roasts an array of coffees in house and on any given day they've a blend and three singles on for espresso, and one or two other beans for filter.
They offer a variety of... Read more
The coffee I had was easily above what it's rated here. The whole area is quite loud, but the service was quite good. The staff that I spoke to knew enough about the coffee and everyone at my table enjoyed the coffee and the food.
Still awesome as ever
This cafe doesn't deserve the crowds that flock here on the weekend. The staff have no idea about coffees nor any sort of customer service. Try somewhere else.
Have a good cup of latte (which I think need to be just a tat bit stronger), and tasted El Savador La Fany. I've thought it a bit lack in bodied, but it tasted good with sweet note. WIll definitely visit again, hoping to get the house blend (Symmetry) for home experiment.
1 Latte, 1 Espresso
After my 4.8 score last time, I decided to give this place a second chance. Coffee was pretty average. Over-cooked shot with poorly cured milk. I've had better home made coffee.
And the food? Wow. Never had such a terrible breakfast. The bacon was as thick as the plate I was eating it... Read more
The Maling Room is run by some of the most dedicated and passionate coffee professionals in the industry. Andrew Lew is a perfectionist and exceptionally talented behind the machine. I'm surprised to see negative feedback towards The Maling Room because I am sure a bad experience is the exception... Read more
A little surprised to see this place rating below a 6. Judging by today's effort (ristretto based flat white), Maling Room are still at the top of their game. As good as I've had anywhere in months. Staff are friendly and knowledgable.
The best hand picked, in house roasted coffee. Great food. Amazing location.
Gorgeous old post office, beans pretty hard to beat. Everything roasted on site - owner Andrew knows exactly what he's doing. Latte art is always perfect, winner.
This place is not good. bad service, all the staff on the weekends are angry teensters who would rather be anywhere else. The service is slow, it's busier than it should be and worst of all, awful coffee.. admittedly i've only been there a couple of times.. but both times the coffee was weak, had... Read more
I couldn\'t help but feel a bit like the place was a little too busy for making a great coffee.. Not bad, the coffee did taste a little too bitter though.
Been coming here for years and I can't actually recall getting anything less than quality everytime. Lattes, espressos, pour overs, cold drips, all done with fanatical attention to detail. Their take home selection of beans is second to none aswell. So much variety!
I went to the maling room with high expectations. But It failed. Epically. Coffee was average. No gluten free options. Eggs weren't cooked with vinegar so fell apart and the whole breakfast was cold. Museli was sugary and too expensive for what was served. I will not be back.
Lovely meal, very generous size. Lovely atmosphere and great to see a wonderful old building renovated and being used. But the coffee??? Sorry not so good and won't try again.
Set in Canterbury, one would be excused for thinking that there would be a possibility that this cafe would be somewhat exclusive.
Their arrogant and prescriptive approach to coffee, placarded on various walls and toilet doors futher cements this opinion in one's mind.
Popped in here on advice from a friend. Instantly put off by the surroundings - this is no fault of their own, but being a heritage building they have been faithful to its age.
Shown to a table by an efficient, if not overly friendly, staff member.
Ordered a flat white... Read more
