I found myself in Ballarat, so thanks to beanhunter- I was able to track down a few cafes to visit.
Bean Barn seemed like the best option, and was not too hard to find. This was a major positive for an 'out of towner'. The layout is much like any other small cafe/roaster, with retail coffee... Read more

arrogant owner, average product. Barely specialty coffee. I wont come back here, especially when some of Australia's premium beans are being used around the corner.
1 Long Black
I recommend this coffee although recommend extra shot as bend I had was to mild for our taste.
Well done bean barn you make a killer coffee. Just don't let the fame get to your head! Bit too confident and cocky
Some exceptional brewing going on at the moment. Tried the cold press 4hour brewed coffee, superb on a hot day. Bean of the week always interesting and coffee consistent, if a little on the bitter side. Still one of the best in the area.

This guy talks up the talk must not have legs cos he can not walk the walk, my coffee very average
While the coffee is still only just catching up with Melbourne, Ballarat does have a specialty roaster. The bean barn has been roasting in Ballarat for around 5 years now and manages to produce a reasonable cup of coffee.
Unfortunately, despite the coffee not being that fantastic,... Read more
This place is a serious coffee house,no BS no pretending.Great selection of single estate coffees and all roasted in house.Prices are reasonable and you will be sure to find what you need here.Very worthwhile.

In theory, a roastery with specialty coffee in Ballarat comes as a great asset, but this cafe needs alot of work. The vibe out back is nice with old bean bags hanging from the celing... but the front area is cold dark and the sound of milk not textured properly led me to the tasting of an espresso.... Read more

They are such a humble roasters but with an amazing product. The single origins are always perfect.
Very ordinary... And I'm being nice
This place takes coffee very seriously. I feel a bit lane ordering my takeaway cap with one. Not particularly atmospheric although staff are friendly to regulars.
This is the coffee shop that helped me give up sugar in my coffee. Great coffee and the owner loves his coffee. Definitely try this shop you will not be disappointed.
The girls at the machine were excited to make my coffee and did a great job. Was great to be able to read about the blend of the week and the coffee was great! Nothing beats the smell of a roasting house.
Make sure you don't put sugar in you're coffee!!!!!!!
So my my friend had a cap and I tried the cold drip filtered short black. My friend described his cap as smooth, a quality brew. My short black was suprisingly nice- slightly herby with a smooth aftertaste. The service was above average and the atmosphere was great. Loved the 'Art of Aroma... Read more
Following all the right guidelines set by the governing bodies, Richard is attempting to re-educate the masses to what constitutes a cup of Jo. No mugs, no sugar and very little else other than the essential are on offer. A choice selection of beans from most of the worlds coffee producing nations... Read more
Coffee ok but don't like being forced into not having sugar. If I want sugar in my coffee, I'll have it - will never go back.
Not a lot wrong with this coffee mob! Roast a bit careless however. Ethiopian a bit sloppy with lots of inconsistent beans and some well over done in the roaster. Coffee from the bar not bad. Need double shot in the flat white and the ristretto was poured way too hot. Many different origins on... Read more
The roast their own coffee here and the owner competes in coffee competitions. The coffee was fab. Great presentation and taste. Also the smell of coffee roasting in the background is very appertising.
Best and freshest in Ballarat.
Great coffee. Bit weird getting a sandwich from next door and bringing it in, but that's what they suggested for lunch.
1 Piccolo
Excellent freshly roasted coffee. Selection of award winning blends or single origins to choose from. Most of the staff are quite knowledgable, if perhaps a tad eccentric. Great location in the center of town, very easy to find. Best cafe in Ballarat.
5 Lattes
Good coffee very friendly staff. Saturday arvos are cheese time.
The best coffee in ballarat. Quality blends and single origin coffees for all tastes.
